AI assistants do not rank ten blue links — they choose a handful of sources and summarise them. Being one of those sources is a different discipline from classic SEO, and it is winnable much faster than most owners expect.
How AI answers actually pick sources
Assistants blend a retrieval step with a generation step. Retrieval pulls candidate documents — from a live search index, from crawled pages, and increasingly from structured feeds. Generation then writes an answer and attributes it to the sources it found easiest to verify.
Two things follow. First, you must be retrievable: crawlable, indexed, and topically unambiguous. Second, you must be quotable: your claims need to be self-contained sentences a model can lift without hedging.
Become a clear entity, not just a website
Models reason about entities — a named business with a category, a location, services, and corroborating mentions elsewhere. If your name, category, and service area differ across your site, your Google Business Profile, and directories, you become a low-confidence entity and get skipped.
- Use one exact business name, address, and phone format everywhere
- Publish an About page that states plainly what you do, for whom, and where
- Add Organization and LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links to your profiles
- Earn mentions on sites that already have topical authority in your category
Write content a model can quote
Lead each section with the answer, then explain. Put the definition, the number, or the recommendation in the first sentence. Use question-shaped headings that mirror how buyers phrase things aloud.
Concrete specifics — prices, timelines, ranges, process steps, eligibility rules — are cited far more often than adjectives. "Most local campaigns show movement in 60 to 90 days" is quotable. "Results vary" is not.
Structure and schema that help
Schema does not force a citation, but it removes ambiguity. Mark up your organisation, services, articles, and author. Keep headings hierarchical, keep one topic per page, and make sure key facts sit in HTML text rather than images or scripts.
Also check the boring things: robots rules, server response times, and whether AI crawlers are blocked at the CDN. We routinely find businesses invisible to assistants purely because of a firewall rule.
Measuring AI visibility
Build a list of twenty buyer questions and test them monthly across two or three assistants. Log whether you are named, what is said, and which page was cited. Watch referral traffic from AI hosts in your analytics as a secondary signal.
Treat it like rank tracking in 2010: crude, manual, and enormously informative while competitors ignore it.
- Be retrievable first: crawlable, indexed, unblocked, consistent.
- Answer-first writing with concrete specifics gets quoted; vague copy does not.
- Test twenty buyer questions monthly and log who gets named.
